How long to reach a savings goal

Two questions, one tool. How long will it take at the amount I can save, and how much do I need to save to be there by a date.

# each month interest = balance × yearly rate ÷ 12 balance = balance + interest + deposit # stop when balance is at or above the goal # the monthly amount for a target is the smallest deposit that gets there in time

Why interest matters less than deposits at first

On a small balance the interest is small. For most short goals, how much you put in each month matters far more than the rate. Interest starts to count when the balance and the time are both large.

Questions people ask

How is the time to reach my savings goal calculated?

The calculator adds a month of interest to your balance, then your deposit, and repeats until the balance reaches the goal. It counts the months for you.

How do I find the monthly amount needed to reach a goal by a date?

Type the number of months in the work backward box. The calculator finds the smallest monthly deposit that reaches the goal in that time, using the same month by month steps.

What interest rate should I use?

Use the yearly rate your savings account pays. If it pays nothing, enter 0 and the answer is simply the goal minus what you have, divided by your monthly deposit.

Does it include taxes or inflation?

No. Interest may be taxable where you live, and prices may rise. For a long goal, raise the target a little to allow for inflation.

Is my data saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent, and the share image is drawn on your device from the result only.
